Raby Bay Dog Beach

Raby Bay Dog Beach is a designated off-leash swimming cove on the Raby Bay foreshore at Cleveland, on the protected western shore of Moreton Bay. The draw is the water: a shallow, sheltered sandy cove that stays swimmable even at high tide, which makes it one of the safest off-lead swims in the Redlands for small dogs, nervous swimmers and strong swimmers alike.

Leash status

Off-leash applies to the designated beach section only, between the groynes on the foreshore. Everywhere else in the surrounding Raby Bay Foreshore Park your dog must be on lead, and dogs are kept out of the nearby netted swimming enclosure and the mangrove and revegetation zones. Effective voice control is the standard even on the sand. Redland City Council has been running erosion management and revegetation works here, so access points can shift; the off-leash beach remains open, but follow the current signage on the day and stay on the defined paths to protect the new plantings.

Max: the off-leash zone is the sand, not the park. Clip the lead on the moment you step up off the beach, because the parkland and the netted enclosure are strictly on-lead or no-dogs.

Water and terrain

The cove is protected, so the water is generally flat and shallow with a sandy bottom and none of the surf that hits the ocean side of the bay. Low to mid tide opens the most sandy running room, while high tide narrows the beach but the swimming stays calm. Salt water means bringing your own fresh water and a bowl, and the rinse-off tap by the foreshore earns its keep on the way out.

Getting there and parking

The beach sits off Masthead Drive in Cleveland, around 35 minutes from Brisbane, with a free off-street car park plus street parking and wheelchair-accessible paths. It is also genuinely doable by train: Cleveland Station sits at the end of the Cleveland line and the foreshore is a short walk away.

Worth knowing

The foreshore parkland is well set up for a long stay, with tree shade, public toilets, barbecues, picnic tables and bins, and dog waste bags are provided though it pays to carry a spare roll. There is no fencing between the off-leash sand and the bay beyond, so the usual recall expectations apply.

When to go

Mid-week mornings and the last hour of daylight are the quiet windows. Sundays are the busiest stretch, when the social dogs come out in force, which is ideal for a confident dog and less so for a shy one.

The Raby Bay Harbour precinct is minutes away, and Raby Bay Harbour and The Pursuit of Hoppiness both run outdoor tables where a leashed, salt-damp dog can settle while you eat.
