Minjerribah Camping

Minjerribah Camping (formerly Straddie Camping) runs the camping grounds and beach camping areas across North Stradbroke Island, reached by vehicle ferry from Cleveland to Dunwich. For dog owners the deciding fact is blunt: dogs are permitted at two of the camping areas only, the Flinders Beach and Main Beach foreshore camping zones. Every township ground, cabin and eco-shack is off-limits.

Dogs at the camping areas

Up to two dogs per campsite are allowed at Flinders Beach and Main Beach only, on a leash and under control at all times. You are responsible for your dog's behaviour, and excessive barking or aggression can get the whole booking asked to leave. No dog fee is itemised in the official terms; standard site fees apply. Dogs are not permitted in cabins or eco-shacks anywhere on the island, and the township grounds at Adder Rock, Cylinder Beach and Amity Point do not take dogs at all, so check the camping area name on your booking before you confirm.

The setup

Flinders Beach and Main Beach are 4WD beach-camping areas, not powered township grounds. Flinders Beach camping is in designated areas signed at each entrance along the beach; Main Beach camping starts about 7km south of the causeway, and no camping is permitted at Jumpinpin. You cannot camp within 50 metres of streams or waterways. Amenities are basic with no dog-specific facilities, so bring your own water, bowls and waste bags, and expect to be self-sufficient: a 4WD with beach access permits is part of the deal.

Getting there and the dog rules

Catch the vehicle ferry from Cleveland to Dunwich, then it is a beach run north to the Flinders Beach zone or across the island to Main Beach. Under Redland City Council rules the camping beaches themselves are on-leash, and the island's designated off-leash beach is the stretch of Home Beach at Point Lookout in front of the Point Lookout Hotel. Dogs are banned outright from Cylinder Beach, the national park (including Brown Lake and Blue Lake), Myora Springs, and the section of Amity Point between Geera Street and the Flinders Beach access. Koalas and shorebirds are the reason the rules are tight, so keep the dog close wherever the signage tightens.
