Minjerribah Camping

Minjerribah Camping (formerly Straddie Camping) runs the camping grounds and beach camping areas across North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah). The single fact that decides whether a dog owner books here: dogs are only permitted at two of those camping areas, Flinders Beach and Main Beach. Every other ground, cabin and eco-shack is off-limits to dogs.

The pet policy. Two dogs per campsite are allowed at Flinders Beach and Main Beach only. Dogs must be on a leash and under control at all times. You are responsible for your dog's behaviour, and you can be asked to leave if your dog exhibits bad behaviour or makes excessive noise. No dog fee is itemised in the official terms; standard site fees apply.

Before you book. This is the warning that matters most. Adder Rock, Cylinder Beach and Amity Point camping grounds are not dog-friendly. Dogs are not permitted in cabins or eco-shacks either. If your booking does not specify Flinders Beach or Main Beach beach camping, your dog is not allowed on site.

The place. Flinders Beach and Main Beach are beach-camping areas, not township grounds with powered sites. Camping at Flinders is in designated areas only, signed at each entrance. Main Beach camping starts 7 kilometres south of the causeway; no camping is permitted at Jumpinpin. You cannot camp within 50 metres of streams or waterways. Amenities are basic and no dog-specific facilities are provided, so bring your own water bowls and supplies.

Location and getting there. Catch the vehicle ferry from Cleveland on the mainland to Dunwich on the island. The Booking Centre is 200 metres up the hill, left after disembarking, diagonally opposite the Dunwich Police station. Flinders and Main Beach camping areas are accessed by 4WD beach driving. A Vehicle Access Permit is required and is only issued for registered 4WD vehicles. Unregistered vehicles, motorbikes and quad bikes are not eligible.

Access cards and permits. At check-in you receive a camping tag (display it on your tent at all times) and Access Cards for the boom gate and amenities blocks. A camping permit is valid for a maximum of 30 days. One vehicle is allowed per unpowered tent site, with a maximum site size of 6m x 6m.

Who it suits. Dog owners who want genuine beach camping and are comfortable with 4WD access, basic amenities and leash rules at all times. If you want a cabin, an eco-shack or a township ground with your dog, this is not the venue.

Off-leash reference. The only off-leash beach area on the island is Home Beach, between Rocky Point and the Rocky Headland in front of the Point Lookout Hotel. It is a separate public beach, not part of the Minjerribah Camping grounds.

When to go. Beach driving means tide timing matters for safe access, so check conditions before you set out from Dunwich. Book well ahead in school holidays and obtain your Vehicle Access Permit at the same time as your camping tag. Good for 4WD-owning dog owners after self-sufficient beach camping on sand.
