The setup. The Cottage at 342 Darling Street is a rustic, farmhouse-styled restaurant and bar, and one of Balmain's more popular spots for dining out with a dog. Dogs are welcome in the front courtyard and exterior seating, not inside the building.

Good to know. Because the dog area is the courtyard rather than every table, flag that you are bringing a dog when you book so they can seat you outside. It is a stylish, leafy setting and water bowls are often provided, but a travel bowl covers you.

Known for. Mediterranean-leaning modern Australian food, well-regarded pizza and cocktails, and a relaxed, vintage-kitsch feel. It sits at the pricier, sit-down end rather than a quick-coffee stop.

Getting there. Street parking along Darling Street is tight and time-limited to one or two hours. Buses run along Darling Street, and the East Balmain ferry wharf is a short bus ride or uphill walk away.

Make a day of it. Mort Bay Park, a large waterfront park with off-leash areas, is a short walk down the hill for a run before dinner.
