Hungry Bull Co. Balmain

Hungry Bull Co. is a rustic Turkish and Mediterranean cafe on Darling Street in Balmain, and one of the suburb's genuinely dog-friendly stops: dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables and the footpath seating out front, plus a small nook out the back that local dog walkers have adopted. Hours run 6am to 4:30pm Monday to Saturday and 7am to 3:30pm Sunday. The compact interior is people-only, so plan on sitting outside.

The dog setup

Staff sort a water bowl for outdoor tables and the kitchen keeps handmade dog biscuits behind the counter, which is rarer than it should be. The Darling Street footpath tables see steady foot traffic, so a settled, on-leash dog handles it best, and a travel bowl is the safe backup on a warm morning. Weekend mornings fill the footpath tables, so an early arrival keeps the pick of the outside spots.

Worth knowing

The menu leans Turkish brunch: menemen, sucuk and egg wraps, gozleme and milkshakes, backed by house specialty coffee. It is a relaxed neighbourhood spot rather than a scene. The 441, 442 and 445 buses run along Darling Street, and street parking on Darling Street and side streets like Beattie Street is metered and limited, so check time limits before settling in, or take the bus and skip the parking hunt entirely.

Make a morning of it: Little Ethel's and Hungry Squirrel Cafe cover the rest of the Balmain coffee run, and The Balmain Hotel handles the pub lunch leg.
