little Ethel's is a quaint, vintage-styled cafe on the Balmain-Rozelle border, rated 4.8 by regulars who come for the home baking as much as the coffee. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor courtyard, and it sits on a quieter residential run just off Darling Street, so it is calmer than the main-strip cafes with the dog in tow.

The dog setup

The outdoor section is the dog spot: a cheerful courtyard set with astroturf and colourful deck furniture, while indoor tables stay people-only. Staff are used to canine customers, but pack a travel bowl on warmer days. The courtyard is compact, so a dog that settles under the table works best, particularly at weekend brunch.

Worth knowing

The coffee is Toby's Estate with rotating single origins, and the counter is the real draw: house-made banana bread with walnuts, carrot cake, cakes by the slice and wraps alongside specialty toasts such as avocado or ricotta with honey, plus the unfailing bacon and egg roll. The bright, nostalgic decor is part of the appeal. Hours run 6am to 12.30pm weekdays and from 7am on weekends, so it is a breakfast-and-morning-tea venue rather than a lunch one.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits a short walk from Darling Street, and the 442 and 433 buses along Darling Street make it reachable without a car. Street parking on the surrounding residential streets works midweek but tightens on weekends.

Make a morning of it

Elkington Park, a few minutes away on Glassop Street, is an Inner West Council park with designated dog on and off leash areas, harbour views and the Dawn Fraser Baths at its edge. Rozelle Bay's foreshore paths give a longer leashed walk. For a proper off-leash run, Murray Park Fenced Dog Park at Annandale is the closest fenced option, with Federal Park Dog Park along the same corridor.
