The setup. little Ethel's is a quaint, vintage-styled cafe on the Balmain-Rozelle border, and dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating - a cheerful courtyard set with astroturf and colourful deck furniture. Indoor tables are for people only.

Good to know. The outdoor section is the dog spot, and it is a comfortable one to settle into. Staff are used to dogs, but pack a travel bowl for warmer days. It sits just off Darling Street on a quieter residential run, so it is calmer than the main-strip cafes.

Known for. Toby's Estate coffee with rotating single origins, specialty toasts like avocado or ricotta and honey, and unfussy lunch plates. The nostalgic, bright-yellow decor is part of the appeal.

Getting there. A short walk from Darling Street, with bus routes along Darling Street making it reachable without a car. Street parking on the surrounding residential streets works midweek but gets tight on weekends.

Make a morning of it. Elkington Park and the Rozelle Bay waterfront paths are both close by for a scenic post-coffee walk with the dog.
