Waterfront Park

Waterfront Park is a tiered grassy hill on the Pyrmont foreshore at Bowman Street, sweeping down towards Rozelle Bay with full views of the Anzac Bridge. The walk up and across the lawn is a short inner-city loop, and the whole park is a designated off-leash area.

The dog setup

The City of Sydney lists Waterfront Park as off-leash at all times, with dogs prohibited in the playground and barbecue areas. Because the park is unfenced and sits right against the water and a public walking path, it suits dogs with a reliable recall rather than serial wanderers.

Leash status

Off-leash across the open grass around the clock, on-lead through the playground and barbecue precincts and on the paths that carry through-traffic. Pick up after your dog; bins are on site but bring spare bags on busy weekends.

Water and facilities

There is public seating and steps along the tiers for taking in the water view, picnic tables, barbecues and a playground, with public toilets adjacent to the park. Bring your own water if you are staying a while, as fountain coverage is limited for dogs.

Hazards

The lawn runs to the water's edge without fencing, and the foreshore edge can drop away steeply in places, so keep an eye on dogs that like to swim. The park shares the foreshore with runners, prams and tourists moving between Pyrmont and Darling Harbour, so recall matters even with the legal right to be off-lead.

Pepsi: the lawn faces west, so it is a genuinely good sunset spot, but it fills up fast on summer evenings. Weekday mornings are the calmer window for an off-lead run.

Getting there and parking

John Street Square light rail stop is about a five-minute walk away and buses stop on Pirrama Road two to three minutes off. Parking is tight, mostly one and two hour ticketed street parking on Point Street and Bowman Street, so arriving on foot or by transit is easier if you are coming from elsewhere in the inner city.

When to go

Weekday mornings and mid-afternoons are the quietest stretches, with summer evenings, weekends and after-work hours consistently busy. The lawn catches the afternoon sun, so it works as a sunset stop most of the year.
