Federal Park Dog Park (Annandale)

Federal Park's dog area sits on the Glebe Foreshore at Annandale: a big open grass paddock running down to the harbour, off-leash twenty-four hours a day, with a skyline view and actual swimming access along the water's edge. It also hooks straight onto the Bay Run and the GreenWay trails, so it works as a destination in its own right or the start of a much longer walk.

The rules

Dogs can run off-leash across the designated grassy area and swim along the foreshore, all day and all night. The catch is what borders it: leash up on the sporting fields whenever a game or training session is underway, because the off-leash zone sits directly beside them, and the area backs onto a car park and a BBQ zone. There is no fence between your dog and any of it, so solid recall is the entry requirement here.

What's there

A small car park on Chapman Road, public toilets, shaded seating and BBQ facilities cover the basics, and the adventure playground with a flying fox and skate ramp keeps kids busy while the dog works the paddock. The harbour edge is the real draw for water-loving dogs, though the foreshore can turn murky after rain.

Worth knowing

Before letting a dog swim, check for blue-green algae warnings after wet weather, and keep an eye out for jellyfish along the foreshore in the warmer months. Tides matter too: at high tide the swim strip narrows, at low tide the mudflats open up. None of this is a dealbreaker, just a glance before the plunge.

Getting there

The park is on Chapman Road, Annandale, a short walk from the Jubilee Park light rail stop. The car park is limited and fills fast on weekends, so the light rail or a walk in along the Glebe Foreshore path is the easier option at peak times.
