Murray Park Fenced Dog Park in Annandale gives Townsville dogs two fully fenced, gated off-leash spaces, a big main area plus a separate yard for small dogs, with enough shade and water to make it a genuine daily stop rather than a special occasion.

The rules. Dogs must be leashed on the way in and out of the fenced area, then kept under effective voice control once off-lead. Current registration is required, aggressive dogs must be muzzled, and any dog with a history of fighting should not enter. Owners are expected to pick up after their dogs and fill in any holes that get dug.

What's there. High-security perimeter fencing separates the large-dog area from the small-dog section, and both have shaded spots, benches, and drinking water for dogs. There is agility equipment in the main area for dogs that like a job to do, plus floodlights for evening visits.

Getting there. The park is at 77 Murray Lyons Crescent, Annandale, with ample parking right outside the fenced areas. There are bus stops in the University Road area nearby, but driving is the easier option.

Nearby with the dogs. Absolute Cravings, about 4 kilometres away in the Palmetum Botanical Gardens, is a solid coffee stop with outdoor seating for dogs after a run.

Check the ground before you let your dog off lead here, since the grass can grow long between mowing rounds and holes are not always filled in properly.

Weekday late afternoons and weekend mornings draw the biggest crowds. Townsville heat bites even with the shade sails up, so an early morning or early evening visit suits dogs that overheat easily.
