Small Dog Park Oasis Centre

This small-dog park in Oonoonba, on Townsville's southern side, is a fully fenced off-leash space built specifically for smaller dogs. If you have a littler dog and want a secure run without large dogs barrelling through, this is the reason to head here.

The dog setup

The perimeter fencing is designed to stop small dogs slipping out, but it only works if you are actually watching the gate: supervision at all times is the core rule. Clean up waste immediately, and bring your own water and bags because neither is guaranteed on site. It is a shared space, so your dog should be comfortable around other small dogs before you unclip.

The surface is mostly grassed with some natural shade, though do not count on much relief through the afternoon sun. Basic seating is often available so you can sit while supervising; treat that as a bonus rather than a certainty.

Max: a fence that keeps the big fellas out is all a little dog needs. Mid-morning is the quiet window if mine gets overwhelmed.

For Toy breeds, puppies and rescue dogs still finding their feet, the value here is the ceiling on dog size rather than the acreage: there is nowhere for an over-boisterous large dog to arrive and change the mood. If your small dog is the confident sort, they will likely run the fence line and collect a following within minutes.

Worth knowing

Mid-morning between 9 and 11am is generally the quietest window. Late afternoon brings the after-work crowd, which is sociable for confident dogs but busy for nervous ones. Council rules also ask owners to fill in any holes their dogs dig, which matters on a small footprint like this.

Getting there and parking

Oonoonba is a few minutes' drive southeast of the Townsville CBD, and the park sits within the community precinct off Shannon Street, with street parking nearby. The Fairfield shopping area is close by for supplies.

While you're out there

National Park Fenced Dog Park at neighbouring Railway Estate is the closest alternative run, and Skull and Swallow in South Townsville is a solid coffee stop on the way back through.
