Giba Park

Giba Park is a small, tiered park on Point Street in Pyrmont, with grassy terraces stepping down toward Johnstons Bay and a clear line of sight across to Balmain, Barangaroo and the Harbour Bridge. For a peninsula packed with apartment dogs, it is one of the few legal off-leash patches, and it punches well above its size thanks to that view.

The dog setup

The park is a designated off-leash area under City of Sydney rules, at all hours, with dogs needing effective control throughout. It is not fully fenced: sandstone terracing and native plantings shape the space, safety railings guard the elevated drops, but the park stays open to surrounding pathways and the stairs connecting down toward Pirrama Park, which is strictly on-leash. That openness means it does not suit a dog prone to bolting, and recall needs to be solid even here.

Bins are provided, though carry your own bags as backup, and leash up again on the surrounding residential streets. Keep dogs clear of nearby children's play areas.

The vibe

Mature trees give reasonable shade and there is usually a water bowl or drinking fountain on site, with seating for owners. The park is a well-known sunset and New Year's Eve vantage point, so expect it to draw a crowd beyond the dog owners in late December. Public toilets are a short walk away at Pirrama Park rather than on site.

Pepsi: the terraces sit up high with a drop to the water on one side, so keep the recall sharp even though the signs say off-leash.

Getting there and parking

Street parking on Point Street and nearby roads is limited and mostly paid, so most visitors arrive on foot along Pyrmont's waterfront paths. The John Street Square light rail stop is a short walk away, and several bus routes run along Harris Street nearby.

Worth knowing

Weekday afternoons around 5pm and Saturday afternoons are the busiest windows as local owners finish work. Mid-week mornings and later at night are quieter, and the terrace view is at its best on a clear evening.

While you're out there

Pair it with the Pyrmont to Darling Harbour foreshore walk for a longer loop, or wander down to Waterfront Park near Anzac Bridge for tiered lawns and another angle on the harbour. Quick Brown Fox Eatery on Union Street welcomes leashed dogs on its outdoor seating, and Fig Lane Park in Ultimo is another inner-city off-leash option.
