Baxter's Reserve Dog Park

Baxter's Reserve Dog Park at 115 Monier Road backs onto natural bushland and a creek line, giving it a quieter, greener feel than most suburban dog parks in Brisbane's west. The off-leash area is fully fenced with a double-gated entrance, a genuinely useful touch when you are wrangling a lead and an excited dog at once.

The dog setup

The enclosure is split into separate sections for large and small dogs, with water stations, shaded seating for owners and a wheelchair-accessible entry. The fenced area is off-leash; dogs stay leashed in the surrounding reserve grounds. Bring your own waste bags, since the on-site supply is not always stocked, and mind your dog near the bush edge, where local wildlife passes through. Shelter cover is patchy in parts of the yard, so pack water on hot days regardless of the stations.

The vibe

A calmer, less crowded alternative to the bigger city dog parks, popular with locals from Seventeen Mile Rocks, Sinnamon Park and Jindalee. Weekend mornings bring the biggest crowds and mid-week mornings are the quiet option. It is a natural, unpaved setting, so expect mud after rain and give the ground a day to dry out.

Pepsi: the creek-side trail running beside the fence is the warm-up lap. Ten minutes on lead there and my dog is ready to actually play instead of spending the whole session sniffing the gate.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits on Monier Road, an easy run off the Centenary Motorway, with on-site parking. Bus routes serve nearby Jindalee and Mount Ommaney, but reaching the reserve from a stop still means a short walk.

Close by with the dogs

Rocks Riverside Park on Counihan Road is close by for an on-leash riverside walk, though dogs stay out of the water play zones, and Sheena's coffee kiosk in that park rounds out the visit. Delapine Place Park Fenced Dog Park is the suburb's other fenced option, and Wilsons Walkway at Mount Ommaney adds a bushland walk to the day.
