Civic Reserve Fenced Dog Park

Civic Reserve's fenced dog park is the community hub of Mornington's dog scene: a large, fully fenced off-leash enclosure at 1 Billabong Close, open around the clock, with double-gated entry, water on tap and enough open running room that social dogs can actually stretch out. It sits inside the wider Civic Reserve precinct alongside the recreation centre, skate park and the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies only inside the fenced enclosure; dogs must be on lead in the wider reserve and car park. Entry is through double-gated airlocks, so close each gate behind you. Keep your dog in view and under control, especially at busy times, and clean up using the bags and bins provided. Children use the rest of the precinct, so mind your dog's manners on the way in and out. Taps with bowls, bench seating and tree shade cover the enclosure, and the ground is grass and dirt.

Worth knowing

This is one big shared space, so a timid or tiny dog is better served at a quiet hour than thrown into the Saturday scrum. The ground turns to mud after rain, which the locals complain about every winter, so time your visit for a dry spell if your dog hates the sludge. Public toilets sit outside the nearby sports pavilion, and the wetland and lake at the edge of the precinct pull geese and other waterbirds right up to the fence line, which can wind up high-drive dogs.

Pepsi: same fence either way, but a weekday morning gets you a calm park and clean paws. After rain, bring a towel or regret it in the car.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is off Dunns Road, just south of the regional gallery, with plenty of parking near the gallery and recreation centre. Buses run along the Nepean Highway and Main Street with a short walk in. Paved paths connect the enclosure to the rest of the precinct.

When to go

Weekday evenings, early mornings and Friday nights are the calmest stretches. It peaks on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and Wednesday mornings when the regulars gather. Go after dry weather and you dodge the mud complaint entirely.

While you're out there
