Fosters Beach Dog Off Leash Area

Fosters Beach is a small rocky cove off the Esplanade in Mornington, roughly 80 metres long and about as quiet as an off lead beach gets on the Mornington Peninsula. The steep walk in keeps the crowds away, so it suits a dog that wants space from other beachgoers or a confident swimmer happy on rock rather than sand.

Leash status

The cove is a designated off lead area under Mornington Peninsula Shire rules, and unusually for the Peninsula it runs 24 hours a day, all year round, with no seasonal time windows. Keep the lead on walking down Nunns Walking Track and until you reach the cove itself, then clip back on for the climb out. Even off lead, the dog needs to stay under effective voice control, and you are expected to carry bags and clean up. There is no fencing here; the cove is bounded by cliffs and rock.

Water and terrain

This is a rugged patch of Port Phillip coastline rather than a sandy run. The shore is small and rocky with sand in patches, and the tide matters a lot: at high tide the water can cover most of the usable beach, leaving little room to stand, let alone play fetch. Time your visit for low to mid tide on a calm day and check the tide chart before you leave. The water itself is the usual sheltered bay standard, fine for a paddle or a swim.

Getting there and parking

Park at the Fossil Beach car park opposite 630 Esplanade and walk in via Nunns Walking Track, a steep unpaved track down to the coast. It is not a pram or wheelchair friendly access, and the climb back up will test older dogs. Public transport along this stretch of the Esplanade is limited, so driving is the practical option.

Worth knowing

There is nothing here: no bins, no seating, no water tap. Bring your own water for the dog, keep hold of your rubbish and take it out with you. The rocky ground is hard on paws in summer heat, so morning visits are kinder.

Max: Steep track in, rocks the whole way, and no one else around. Worth it for a cove to ourselves.

When to go

Low to mid tide is the short answer, with early morning the pick of the windows: cooler rock, softer light and fewer dog walkers on the narrow track. Skip it after heavy rain or in big swell, when the rock shelf offers nowhere dry to stand.
