Royal Beach Dog Off Leash Area

Royal Beach is a small west facing pocket beach just south of Schnapper Point in Mornington, roughly 190 metres of sand and reef squeezed between red sandstone bluffs and the Mornington Bowling Club. Its claim to fame is simple: it is dedicated off leash 24 hours a day, every day of the year, one of the few spots on this stretch of Port Phillip where the lead can come off at any hour.

Leash status

Mornington Peninsula Shire lists Royal Beach as a year round, unrestricted off leash beach. Your dog needs to stay within sight and under effective voice or hand control the whole time, you must carry bags and pick up, and the leash goes back on the moment you step off the sand onto the access track or The Esplanade. Keep clear of any signed shorebird protection areas and note the beach is not fenced, though the bluffs behind it help contain the space.

Water and terrain

The bay water here is calm by design: Port Phillip has no surf to speak of, so confident swimmers paddle out and cautious dogs wade in. The catch is the tide. At low tide a flat rock and reef shelf exposes a run of rock pools to sniff through, while high tide pushes the water up and leaves only a narrow sand and pebble strip. Mid tide gives you the best balance of sand to run on and water deep enough for a proper swim.

Pepsi: time it for late afternoon and you get calm water, a bit of sand and the sunset over the bay all in one visit. The rock pools at low tide are worth the scramble too.

Getting there and parking

The access point is at 774 Esplanade, Mornington, down a sloped walking track and steps cut into the hillside from near Schnapper Point Drive. Parking directly on The Esplanade is limited, paid and timed, so most people use the car parks at Mornington Park about 150 metres north or near the Main Street shops and walk down. It is an easy foreshore walk from the town centre.

Worth knowing

There are no facilities on the beach itself: no taps, no bins at every entry, no shade beyond what the cliffs throw late in the day. Public toilets and drinking water sit at the top of the track in Mornington Park. Bring your own water and bags, and watch footing on the rocks at low tide, which get slick for dogs and humans alike.

When to go

Early morning and late afternoon at mid tide are the sweet spots, with fewer people and the most usable beach. Sunny weekends and the summer holidays fill the small space quickly from mid morning, and this is a popular sunset run with locals, so expect company in the last hour of light.

While you're out there

Main Street's dog friendly tables are a short walk up the hill: The Winey Cow keeps a dedicated dog menu, and Kirks on the Esplanade sits right opposite the foreshore. If you want a fenced run instead, Civic Reserve Fenced Dog Park is the local option.
