Nagle Park

Nagle Park occupies the block around 1R Holden Street in Maroubra, a mix of playing fields, mature shade trees and open grass that doubles as one of Randwick's off leash dog areas. It is open around the clock, and locals use it both ways: organised sport through the day, dogs and walkers filling the edges early and late. The dog setup

Randwick City Council designates parts of Nagle Park as an off leash dog exercise area, so the off leash status is official rather than folklore. Two exclusions apply and both matter: the sportsfields are off leash territory only when they are not in use for organised games or training, and dogs are kept out of the fenced children's playground and the 10 metre buffer around it. The ground itself is unfenced, so your dog needs to be under effective control the whole time, and waste has to be picked up. When rugby or cricket is running, the sensible read is that the fields belong to the sport and the off leash options shift to the quieter grass away from the pitch.

Because the park is unfenced, it suits dogs with a reliable recall more than flight risk puppies. Getting there and making a day of it

Street parking runs along Holden Street and the surrounding blocks, busiest on Saturday mornings when junior sport takes the fields. Open 24 hours, though the off leash rules only make sense in daylight when you can see sport bookings and playground traffic. Bring water in the hotter months despite the bubblers, keep the lead handy for the playground side, and check whether a game is on before letting the dog range across the fields.
