The setup. Chalk is a casual specialty coffee spot on McKeon Street, a short walk up from the Maroubra Beach promenade. Dogs are actively welcome at the pavement tables out front, and the cafe makes a point of it - friendly staff, free biscuits for dogs, and water bowls out the front.

What it is known for. Well-rated specialty coffee and an all-day breakfast and brunch menu, open daily from 6am. It leans community, with surfers, families and dog owners all through the door. Friday Taco Night runs from 4pm with wine and cocktails.

Getting there. Street parking is on McKeon Street and the surrounding streets, so check the signs for restricted or paid zones. It is an easy stop straight off the Maroubra beachfront, so walking in is often simpler than driving on a sunny weekend.

Nearby. The Maroubra beachfront promenade is right there for a leashed walk, and the coastal path south toward South Maroubra makes a good longer loop. Keep dogs off the sand, as the beach itself is a strict no-dog zone.
