If you want green space where a dog can actually stretch out, these are the spots, not the beach itself.

The rules. Dogs must be under effective control at all times, even in off-leash areas, which means reliable recall rather than a dog that bolts. Outside the designated off-leash zones, including the coastal walkway, dogs are on-leash. The main Coogee Beach sand is a no-dog zone, as are playgrounds. Cleaning up is mandatory. Signage marks the boundaries at each reserve, so check it on arrival because the off-leash area is often only part of the reserve.

What is there. Bardon Park has water bowls, dog waste bags and bench seating, with a playground nearby. Grant Reserve adds barbecues and public toilets. Trenerry Reserve is the biggest, coastal, and scenic. Lighting is patchy across all three, so daylight visits are the sensible default.

Getting there. Bardon Park sits at 71R Mount St, Coogee. Street parking around Mount St and the beach reserves is limited and fills fast on fine weekend mornings, so come early or walk in. Buses including the 373, 374 and 353 serve Coogee within walking distance, and the Coastal Walkway links the reserves on foot.

Nearby with the dogs. The cafe strip along Coogee Bay Road and the streets one back from the beach has several dog-friendly spots for a coffee after a run.

When to go. Weekday mornings and late in the day are the quiet windows; weekend mornings are social but busy, so go early if your dog prefers space. If you plan to walk the coastal path as well, a lower tide opens up more room near the water. Good for a sociable dog with solid recall.
