Hawthorne Canal Reserve

Hawthorne Canal Reserve is a linear off-leash park on Canal Road in Leichhardt, running alongside the canal and the light rail. The draw is the combination: a leash-free area open at all times inside its bounded zone, plus Cafe Bones on site, which makes this one of the Inner West's most social dog spots rather than just a patch of grass.

The dog setup

Under Inner West Council rules, the off-leash zone is the area bounded by the canal, the light rail line and path, and the Canal Road car park. It is leash-free at all times inside that boundary. Everywhere else, including the walk in from the surrounding streets, is on lead.

Keep dogs at least 10 metres clear of the children's playground, and stay engaged: this is a busy, well-socialised crowd, and it works because owners supervise. The canal edge gives water-keen dogs some access, though it is a tidal waterway rather than a swimming beach.

Worth knowing

Cafe Bones sits at the end of Canal Road and pours coffee for owners plus treats and puppacinos for dogs, with public toilets nearby. The reserve has waste bags and bins and bench seating along the path. The canal itself is tidal: low tide exposes mudflats that some dogs love and some owners regret, so time your visit around the tide if you would rather skip the wash-down.

Max: the light rail runs right alongside the off-leash zone. If your dog bolts or spooks at noise, keep them close near the tram path until you know how they handle it.

Getting there

The reserve sits right next to the Hawthorne light rail stop, which is the easy option. On-street parking along Canal Road is limited and fills fast at peak times. The Hawthorne Canal pathway also links in on foot from neighbouring suburbs.
