What visitors mention
An all-hours off-leash run beside the canal, with a dog cafe on site. Hawthorne Canal Reserve is a linear off-leash park on Canal Road in Leichhardt, running alongside the canal and the light rail. The draw is the combination: a leash-free area open at all times, plus Cafe Bones right there, which makes it one of the Inner West's most social dog spots rather than just a patch of grass.
The rules. The off-leash area is the designated zone bounded by the canal, the light rail path and Canal Road parking. It is leash-free at all times inside that boundary. Outside the zone, including the walk in from surrounding streets, dogs must be on lead. Keep dogs at least 10 metres clear of the children's playground, and keep them supervised and under control given the crowd.
What's there. Cafe Bones sits on site and pours coffee for owners plus treats for dogs. There are public toilets near the cafe, waste bags and bins, and bench seating along the path. The canal edge gives water-keen dogs some access, though it is a tidal waterway, not a swimming beach.
The water and mud. The canal is tidal. At low tide it exposes mudflats that some dogs love and some owners regret, expect mud and a bit of odour. High tide brings the water closer to the park edge. If you would rather skip the wash-down, time your visit around the tide.
Getting there. The reserve sits right next to the Hawthorne light rail stop, which is the easy option. On-street parking runs along Canal Road but is limited and fills fast at peak times. The Hawthorne Canal pathway also links in from neighbouring suburbs on foot.

When to go. Saturday mornings and weekday evenings after work are the busiest, great for socialising, less so for training. For room to throw a ball or work on recall, come mid-morning or mid-afternoon on a weekday. Good for social dogs who like a busy crowd.
