Bede Spillane Reserve Fenced Dog Park

Bede Spillane Reserve on Queen Street is a fully fenced, 24-hour off-leash dog park in the middle of Croydon's residential streets. The double-gate airlock entry and floodlights make it one of the more secure and usable options in the inner west, and it is popular enough that you will rarely have the yard to yourself.

The dog setup

Inner West Council runs the fenced area as off-leash, with dogs back on lead once outside the gates. Entry goes through a secure double-gate airlock, so there is no bolt-for-the-street moment while you work the second gate. Inside is a large, flat, grassy rectangle with a central garden and mature trees for shade, a water station with a bowl, benches, rubbish bins and bag dispensers on site. Floodlights keep the park usable after dark, and the reserve is listed as wheelchair accessible.

Max: use the airlock properly. Close the first gate fully before opening the second, especially if your dog is quick off the lead.

Worth knowing

The flat grass surface holds water and can turn muddy after heavy rain, so expect dirty paws in wet weather. Timing shapes the crowd: weekday mid-morning to early afternoon is the quietest stretch, while evenings after work are the busiest, with roughly 5pm to 7pm being the rush, floodlit through winter. If your dog finds big groups overwhelming, give that window a miss. It is a genuinely social park, which suits dogs that like company.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits on Queen Street, Croydon, with free but non-dedicated street parking in the surrounding blocks. Croydon railway station on the T2 line is a short walk away, and local buses run along Liverpool Road, so arriving without a car is realistic.

Croydon has a dense cluster of dog-friendly reserves: Eastfield Fenced Dog Park is the other fenced option nearby, and Charles Allen Reserve Dog Off Leash Area adds an unfenced alternative. For a bigger session, Hawthorne Canal Reserve at Leichhardt is the inner west's most famous fenced run. Cafes along Queen Street and The Strand, including Queen Street cafe, are an easy walk with a tired dog.
