Lewisham West dog off-leash area

Lewisham West dog off-leash area is Inner West Council's purpose-built dog park on Hudson Street, Lewisham, and the first piece of the GreenWay missing links project to open to the public. It replaced formerly inaccessible land with a dedicated off-leash space for a part of Sydney with one of the highest concentrations of dog ownership in the city, and it has quickly become the local default for a proper run.

The dog setup

The main area is fully fenced, with a separate smaller off-leash enclosure for small dogs, natural play spaces to sniff out, a concrete path ringing the park, and shaded trees for resting. Poop bags are not always stocked on site, so carry your own and bin all waste. Dogs must stay under effective voice control and supervised the whole visit. Even on a leash, dogs are prohibited within 10 metres of the children's playground next door, so route your entry and exit accordingly.

Worth knowing

Parts of the park have been through returfing and construction work tied to the wider GreenWay build, with some sections closed at times through 2026. Check the council signage at the gate for which sections are open before you let your dog loose. A dog water station sits near the boundary, but bring a bowl and spare water anyway, especially in summer. Mid-morning weekdays between 10am and 2pm are the quietest stretches, which suits anxious dogs and training work; weekends peak between 9am and 11am, and weekday afternoons fill up from 5pm.

Max: read the gate signage on arrival. Between the returfing works and the small dog enclosure, which yard is open matters more here than at most parks.

Getting there and parking

Entry is via Hudson Street, with the Lewisham West light rail stop a five to ten minute walk away and Petersham station the nearest heavy rail option. Street parking on Hudson Street is limited and gets busy on weekends, so arriving on foot or by light rail is the easier play. The park sits along the GreenWay corridor, so it also slots neatly into a longer walk along the shared path.
