Excelsior Jones is a busy corner cafe on Frederick Street, the kind of neighbourhood spot that fills up fast on weekend mornings. Dogs are welcome at the footpath tables out front, which is where you will end up sitting anyway if you bring one.

Getting there. Excelsior Jones is on the corner of Frederick and Henderson Street, about a 10-15 minute walk from Ashfield Station. Street parking exists on Frederick Street and the surrounding residential streets but gets tight during the Saturday and Sunday brunch rush.

Nearby with the dogs. Ashfield Park is a five to seven minute walk north and has plenty of open space and shade for a run-around after coffee.

Weekday mornings are the easiest time to get a footpath table with a dog in tow. On weekends, get there early or expect to wait.
