Excelsior Jones

Excelsior Jones is a busy corner cafe on Frederick Street in Ashfield, the kind of neighbourhood spot that fills fast on weekend mornings. Dogs are welcome at the footpath tables out front, which is where you will end up sitting anyway if you bring one. It opens from 6.30am on weekdays and 7.30am on weekends, trading through to 3pm.

The dog setup

Seating for dogs is footpath-side, at the tables outside on the Frederick and Henderson Street corner. Staff are used to dogs waiting there and will generally bring out a water bowl if you ask, but it pays to pack your own on a hot day. Keep leads short given the corner position and the foot traffic, and settle your dog close to the table rather than out on the pavement edge.

Worth knowing

The kitchen has a strong local following for its breakfast rolls, sourdough crumpets and seasonal brunch plates. Saturday and Sunday mornings get genuinely busy, with a wait for tables, so a weekday visit is the calmer option if you have a dog that would rather not queue.

Getting there and parking

It sits on the corner of Frederick and Henderson Street, about a 10 to 15 minute walk from Ashfield Station. Street parking exists on Frederick Street and the surrounding residential streets but gets tight during the weekend brunch rush, so arriving before 8am on a Saturday is the safest bet if you are driving.

Close by with the dogs

Ashfield Park is a five to seven minute walk north with plenty of open space and shade for a run-around after coffee. If the footpath tables are full, Brewfield Cafe & Catering and POMPOM Cafe are the suburb's other dog-friendly coffee stops.
