Excelsior Jones is a busy corner cafe on Frederick Street, the kind of neighbourhood spot that fills up fast on weekend mornings. Dogs are welcome at the footpath tables out front, which is where you will end up sitting anyway if you bring one.

The dog setup. Seating for dogs is footpath-side, at the tables outside on Frederick and Henderson Street. Staff are used to dogs waiting there and will generally bring out a water bowl if you ask. Keep leads short given the corner location and foot traffic.

Good to know. The cafe has a strong local following for its breakfast rolls, sourdough crumpets and seasonal brunch menu, and it gets genuinely busy on Saturday and Sunday mornings. If you want a quieter sit with the dog, aim for a weekday.

Getting there. Excelsior Jones is on the corner of Frederick and Henderson Street, about a 10-15 minute walk from Ashfield Station. Street parking exists on Frederick Street and the surrounding residential streets but gets tight during the Saturday and Sunday brunch rush.

Nearby with the dogs. Ashfield Park is a five to seven minute walk north and has plenty of open space and shade for a run-around after coffee.

Weekday mornings are the easiest time to get a footpath table with a dog in tow. On weekends, get there early or expect to wait.
