Leslie Muir Reserve

Leslie Muir Reserve (also known locally as Close Street Reserve) is a fully fenced, off-leash dog park on the banks of the Cooks River in Canterbury. It is off-leash 24/7 inside the fence line, has a secure double-gate entry, and connects straight onto the Cooks River cycleway for a longer walk afterwards.

The rules. Dogs run off-leash any time inside the fenced area. Once you are outside the fence, on the surrounding river path or in the street, dogs need to be back on lead. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs, and aggressive or reactive dogs need to be managed closely since it is a shared, unstaffed space.

What's there. The reserve has agility-style equipment for active dogs, a drinking water station, some shade trees, and mostly flat, open grass. The double-gate airlock at the entry is a genuine safety feature, useful if your dog tends to bolt.

Getting there. Free street parking on Close Street is the only option, no dedicated car park, so it tightens up during peak times. Canterbury railway station on the T3 line is an easy walk away, which makes this a realistic no-car visit.

Watch-outs. The park is unlit at night, so plan for daylight or early evening. Being on the river flat, the ground can turn muddy or boggy after heavy rain.

Nearby with the dogs. Cooks Cafe is a short walk away on Canterbury Road and welcomes dogs in its outdoor seating with water and treats. Campsie Off Leash Dog Area and Peter Moore Field Fenced Dog Park are also within a few minutes' drive if you want to compare fenced parks in the area.

Weekday mid-mornings are the quietest window; expect more dogs before work, after 4pm, and on weekends. Good for confident dogs that enjoy an open run, less ideal after dark given the lack of lighting.
