Hughes Park Fenced Dog Park in Earlwood is a fully fenced, double-gated off-leash area open 24 hours, reached off Westfield Street in Sydney's inner southwest. It is a straightforward local run rather than a destination park, and the fencing makes it usable for dogs without reliable recall.

The dog setup

Inside the enclosure dogs are off lead, and Canterbury-Bankstown Council expects effective voice or hand control, supervision at all times and immediate clean up with the bins provided. A lead is required on the way to and from the park because the surrounding grounds are on-leash, and dogs stay clear of the playground and sports fields during matches or training.

The yard has a double-gated entry, a water station for dogs, bins and benches, plus some puppy platforms and agility-style features. There is no separate small-dog section, so owners of smaller dogs should size up the regulars before unclipping.

Max: check the gate is fully latched behind you before letting your dog off leash, double gates only work if both are closed.

The vibe

Weekday afternoons are the quiet window; Sunday afternoons and Monday mornings draw the biggest crowd of regulars. Aggressive dogs are expected to be removed immediately, and the park works best for dogs that are comfortable mixing at close quarters in a modest-sized yard.

The park sits on Narani Crescent in Earlwood, with street parking on Narani Crescent and Westfield Street. Bus stops on Homer Street or Williams Street are a short walk away if you are arriving on foot with the dog.

Frank and Chitch on Barnes Avenue is about five minutes away and welcomes dogs at its outdoor tables, and Cooks Cafe at Canterbury is another easy stop. For a second off-lead option, Leslie Muir Reserve sits across the river.
