Shepherd Parade Reserve Off Leash Dog Area

Shepherd Parade Reserve is Bardwell Valley's local off-leash spot, a stretch of open, unfenced grass bordering Bardwell Creek that suits a proper creek-side sniff more than a fenced play session. It is open around the clock, and the creek is the main drawcard, so come prepared for a wet or muddy dog.

The dog setup

Dogs can run off-leash here under Bayside Council rules, but they need to stay under effective voice or signal control and in your sight the whole time, and you must carry a lead and be able to restrain your dog immediately. Leash up before you enter and before you leave, since the reserve borders residential streets, and keep dogs at least 10 metres from any playground equipment. Any dog harassing people, other dogs or wildlife needs to go straight back on lead. There is no fencing at all, so this only works for a dog that reliably comes back when called. Bins are provided for waste, but no bags, so bring your own.

Max: no fencing and no water on site means this one is for confident, recall-reliable dogs only. Bring your own bowl and keep a lead handy for the creek banks.

Worth knowing

Facilities are deliberately basic: no water tap, no seating, no toilets, and no lighting, so plan on a daylight visit. Expect mud after rain, because this is a creek flat rather than a manicured park. Weekdays tend to be quieter than the late afternoon rush, and Sunday is generally the calmest day to visit. Good for dogs that love a muddy creek paddle and know their way back to you.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits on Shepherd Parade in Bardwell Valley, in Sydney's St George area. Free on-street parking runs along the street itself, and it is best reached by car or on foot from the surrounding residential blocks, as there is no direct public transport to the gate.

While you're out there

For a fully fenced alternative, Cahill Park Fenced Dog Park at Wolli Creek is a short drive away, and Kingsgrove Avenue Reserve Fenced Dog Park adds another enclosure inland. Refuel afterwards at Where's Wolli Cafe or ickle coffee at Kingsgrove.
