Salix Reserve East

Salix Reserve East is the off-leash half of the Salix Reserve pairing in Helensvale, on the eastern side of Mildura Drive on the Gold Coast. It is open suburban parkland rather than a built dog facility: grass, benches, mature trees and a marked dog exercise area where leads come off. Open 24 hours, though it makes most sense in daylight when you can actually see what your dog is sniffing.

The dog setup

There is no fence here. Dogs can run off-leash within the marked Salix Reserve East boundaries only, under effective voice control at all times. Keep the lead on while you walk through the western reserve and the car park, because that side is on-leash under City of Gold Coast rules. Dogs are not permitted in the small fenced playground near the Fairhaven Court entrance, waste goes in the bin, and a supervisor aged 17 or over needs to be with the dog.

Max: the boundary on the Mildura Drive side is just a sign, not a barrier. I drop the lead well inside the field and keep an ear on the road.

The vibe

This is a neighbourhood field for running and socialising, not a destination park. Weekday mornings before 8 and afternoons from 4 to 6 are the busy windows and weekends fill up too; the middle of the day tends to be quietest. After heavy rain the ground goes boggy, so that is a visit to skip. There is some shade from mature trees, benches for owners, and nothing in the way of dog water infrastructure, so bring your own water bowl and waste bags.

Getting there and parking

Access is off Mildura Drive, Helensvale, with parking near the entrance and accessible parking provided. Helensvale Station, the interchange for the G:link tram and heavy rail, is a short drive or a longer walk away, and local buses run the nearby streets.

Close by with the dogs

If your dog needs a fully fenced session instead, the Xenia Park Fenced Dog Park is in the same suburb, and the Mangrove Jack Park leash-free area is another open run nearby. For coffee, Pi and Pine Cafe and Three Tree Frogs are local stops that welcome dogs.
