Wingrove Park is Eltham's natural-terrain off-leash option, off Main Road near the Mount Pleasant Road end, where open grass, bushland and Diamond Creek all share one reserve. This is a roam-through-the-trees kind of spot rather than a manicured fenced enclosure, and Nillumbik Shire Council zones the park carefully, so it pays to know which strip you're standing in before you unclip.

The dog setup

Council's zoning places the designated off-leash area between the Wingrove Park Trail and Diamond Creek, with the bushland and water's edge on one side and the trail on the other. Dogs must be back on leash within five metres of any shared path, and on leash in the strip between the trail and Main Road as well as in playground and marked restricted zones. Off-lead means under effective control: constant sight, instant recall, no hassling wildlife or other park users. Bring your own water; there's no dedicated dog tap flagged.

The vibe

Weekend mornings and late weekday afternoons draw the local walkers; midweek mornings leave you the most room. The Wingrove Park Trail runs through the reserve, so expect cyclists and prams crossing your zone, which is exactly why the five metre leash rule matters. Because the park sits in a bushland gully along the creek, it stays pleasantly cool under the trees in summer.

Getting there and parking

The park sits on Main Road, Eltham, near the Mount Pleasant Road intersection, with a dedicated car park typically reached off Mount Pleasant Road. Buses run along Main Road, and Eltham Station on the Hurstbridge line is a short drive or a long walk away. The shared trail connects into the wider Diamond Creek path network if you want to arrive on two legs, dog on four, both on lead until you're inside the off-leash zone.

Worth knowing

Main Road runs close to one edge of the reserve and nothing is fenced, so this isn't the park for a dog that bolts; keep the lead on until you're well clear of the road side and inside the correct zone. If a fully enclosed space suits your dog better, Eltham North Dog Park is a dual-zone fenced park a few minutes north, and Eltham Lower Park Dog Fenced Oval and Off Leash Area combines a fenced oval with more open parkland.
