Charles Kernan Reserve

Charles Kernan Reserve is a small inner-city park on Abercrombie Street in Darlington, a short walk from the University of Sydney and Redfern Station. The grassed area is off-leash 24/7, which is the main draw, but it's completely unfenced against a busy road.

The rules. The main grassed area is off-leash around the clock. Dogs need to be under effective voice control, and owners must clean up after them. Leash up within about 10 metres of the fenced playground. Because the park backs straight onto Abercrombie Street with no fencing, it suits dogs with solid recall rather than nervous or bolt-prone ones.

What's there. A single BBQ, shaded picnic spots, benches and a drinking fountain. There's a fenced playground and a community garden next door, but no public toilets on site.

Getting there. The reserve is at 296-304 Abercrombie Street, Darlington. Street parking is limited to timed or resident-permit spots, so it can be tricky midweek. Bus routes run along Abercrombie Street, and it's an easy walk from Redfern Station.

Nearby with the dogs. A few cafes along Abercrombie Street and through Redfern and Chippendale have outdoor tables where well-behaved dogs are generally welcome, and there are pet-friendly stays scattered through the surrounding suburbs if you're visiting.

When to go. Busiest morning (seven to nine) and early evening (four to six) with the local after-work crowd, and a social scene on weekends. Mid-morning or early afternoon on a weekday is quieter if your dog prefers space.
