Coochie Dog Area

Coochie Dog Area is a seasonal off-leash beach on Main Beach, west of the barge ramp on Coochiemudlo Island, managed by Redland City Council. It is a sandy stretch with shallow water for swimming, soldier crabs working the sand and seabirds along the shoreline, and it is generally clean and well maintained.

The dog setup

Seasonal restrictions apply and they are strict, so check the dates before you travel. May to August is full off-leash any time. January to February and November to December allow off-leash between 5pm and 9am only. March to April and September to October are on-leash only. Dogs must stay within the designated boundary signs to be off-leash, and the beach east of the barge ramp is prohibited entirely. Wildlife protection is the reason for the seasonal limits.

Do not expect water bowls or bins; there are no confirmed dog facilities here, so bring water and a portable bowl and carry out your waste bags. Keep a lead handy for the on-leash and restricted periods.

Pepsi: time your visit for winter. Full off-leash all day, cooler sand, and no standing around waiting for 5pm.

The vibe

This is island-strength calm: a small beach crowd, clear shallow water that suits dogs of every size, and Moreton Bay views across to the mainland. May to August is the clear window if you want off-leash freedom at any hour. Outside those months you are working with early morning or evening windows, or on-leash only.

Getting there and parking

Catch the passenger ferry from Victoria Point to Coochiemudlo Island; dogs are allowed on board. From the ferry terminal it is a short walk to Main Beach. There is no vehicle traffic to think about once you are on the island, which makes the whole outing relaxed.

Back on the mainland, Victoria Point has a cluster of fenced options: the Eprapah Creek Corridor Fenced Dog Park and Les Moore Park Fenced Dog Park both give dogs an enclosed run if the tide or the season is against you. Before the ferry, The Park Social in Redland Bay is known for its water bowls and pup treats on the outdoor tables.
