Coochie Dog Area

The basics. Coochie Dog Area is a seasonal off-leash beach on Main Beach, west of the barge ramp on Coochiemudlo Island. Managed by Redland City Council, it is a sandy stretch with shallow water for swimming, soldier crabs in the sand and seabirds along the shoreline. Generally clean and well maintained.

The rules. Seasonal restrictions apply and they are strict, so check dates before you travel. May to August is full off-leash any time. January to February and November to December allows off-leash between 5pm and 9am only. March to April and September to October is on-leash only. Dogs must stay within the designated boundary signs to be off-leash, and the beach east of the barge ramp is prohibited entirely. Wildlife protection is the reason for the seasonal limits.

What's there. Sandy beach, shallow swimming water and crab and bird life. No confirmed dog facilities, so do not expect water bowls or bins.

Getting there. Catch the passenger ferry from Victoria Point to Coochiemudlo Island. Dogs are allowed on board. From the ferry terminal it is a short walk to Main Beach.

Watch-outs. Bring water and a portable bowl, and pick up after your dog. Keep a lead handy for the on-leash and restricted periods.

When to go. May to August is the clear window if you want off-leash freedom at any hour. Outside those months you are working with early morning or evening windows, or on-leash only.
