Alma Treloar Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Alma Treloar Reserve's dog off-leash area sits at 79 Pakenham Road in Cockatoo, on the foothill side of the Dandenong Ranges under Cardinia Shire Council. It is a fully fenced, hill-country space with real elevation, so a session here actually tires dogs out, and recent council upgrades have lifted it from basic to one of the better-equipped parks on this side of the ranges. Open 24 hours.

The dog setup

The off-leash zone is fenced with secure double-gate entries on both the north and south sides, and the upgrade added separate access areas for active dogs plus a quieter sensory space for shy or calmer dogs. Agility equipment, including weave poles and ramps, gives structured training an option between free play. Seating and shelters sit near both entrances, and a drinking fountain with an attached dog bowl keeps water sorted. Concrete paths hold up in wet weather, though the grass still goes muddy after sustained rain in the ranges.

Off-leash applies inside the enclosure only; the wider reserve is multi-use and dogs stay on-lead elsewhere. Council rules ask for voice or visual control, your dog within 50 metres of you, a leash carried at all times, current council registration, and immediate leashing if a dog gets pushy. Waste goes in the bins provided.

The vibe

This is a community reserve first and a dog park within it: a playground, skate park and BMX track share the precinct, and the Cockatoo Country Market sets up next door on Saturday mornings, which lifts both the crowds and the drop-in energy. Weekday mornings and early afternoons are calm, and the hillside setting makes even a busy session pleasant.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits at the corner of McBride Street and Pakenham Road, with a sealed car park at the nearby community complex. Bus route 695 runs along Pakenham Road if you are arriving by public transport. Access is manageable for prams and older dogs thanks to the concrete path network.

Make a day of it

The Emerald to Cockatoo Trail and the longer Cockatoo to Gembrook Trail both start close by for a leashed leg-stretch, and Pepis Land at Emerald adds a creek-access alternative a short drive down the road. In Emerald, The Railway Dog is a dog-welcoming pub for afterwards.

Max: the ramp ladder is climbed, the hill is claimed, and the sensory garden is inspected for compliance before anyone is allowed to leave.
