The Railway Dog

The Railway Dog is a tavern on Belgrave-Gembrook Road in the main street of Emerald, named after Jerry, the area's well-known wandering railway dog. It has a genuine local following for its tap and craft beer list, live music and open mic nights, and dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating areas, which puts it among the more reliably dog-friendly pubs in the Dandenong Ranges.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating areas, on lead and settled beside the table. Indoor access is not guaranteed, so check with staff when you arrive if you are hoping to bring the dog inside on a cold hillside evening. Water bowls are commonly put out, but bring your own back-up in case none is out when you visit.

The vibe

Expect a relaxed, local-crowd room with a solid craft and tap beer selection, a decent wine list, and regular live music and open mic nights. Hours run from midday Wednesday to Saturday, from 4pm Tuesday and midday Sunday, and the pub closes Mondays. It works for quiet weekday drinks as well as busier gig nights, so pick your session to suit the dog.

Getting there and parking

The pub is at Shop 5, 329 Belgrave-Gembrook Road, Emerald. Street parking is available along the main road and around the town centre, and Emerald station on the Belgrave line is an easy walk away. The Puffing Billy steam trains pass close enough to watch from outside while the dog has a sniff around.

Close by with the dogs

Pepi's Land on the outskirts of Emerald is the off-leash option for a proper run before a pub lunch, while Emerald Lake Park allows dogs on leash only around Lake Treganowan and its walking tracks, per Cardinia Shire Council. The Emerald to Cockatoo trail starts in town for a longer on-lead walk, and the Glenview Retreat nearby is a pet-friendly stay if you are staying over.
