Pepis Land Dog Off Leash Area

Pepi's Land is a 25 hectare reserve on the edge of Emerald in the Dandenong Ranges, and it is one of the better off-leash setups in Melbourne's outer southeast. Cardinia Shire Council runs the park as a multi-use space: grassy slopes with wide views, gravel and sealed walking and cycling tracks, netball courts, a playground, exercise stations and a pavilion, with the dog off-leash area woven through the open ground rather than squeezed into a leftover corner.

The dog setup

The off-leash area sits within the fenced reserve where dogs can run freely under your control. Council's off-leash rules apply: keep your dog within sight and within 50 metres, be ready to leash up on request, and leave the area if your dog starts hassling people or other dogs. All dogs need to be council registered, and droppings go in the bins provided. Owners with cautious dogs tend to visit early, when the regular walkers have the reserve mostly to themselves.

Pepsi: the hill in the middle is the thing nobody warns you about. It is steep enough that a fast dog can disappear over the crest for a few seconds, so walk the top once before you let your dog off.

The vibe

Locals treat Pepi's Land as the suburb's backyard. Dog walkers do laps of the tracks, netball training fills the courts on weeknights, and the playground keeps families around on weekends. The slopes give the park a different feel to a flat suburban oval, and on a clear day the views across the ranges are part of the appeal. It is casual and unhurried rather than a heavy social scene.

Getting there and parking

The car park is off Beaconsfield-Emerald Road, with entries into the reserve from the surrounding streets. Emerald township is close enough to walk, and the Puffing Billy railway line runs just north of the reserve, which is more atmosphere than a nuisance, though a whistle can unsettle an anxious dog on a first visit.

While you're out there
