The former Olinda golf course on Falls Road has been turned over to dogs, and it is one of the best off-leash runs in the Dandenong Ranges. Acres of old fairway open out across the hilltop, with bush trails along the edges and views worth the drive up from Melbourne. The catch is the off-leash zone is only part of the site, so know the boundary before you let the lead off.

The rules. Dogs run off-leash only in the designated lower fairway area. The rest of the site, including the new nature play space and the adjoining Mathias Track, is on-leash. Keep your dog in sight and under voice or hand control, and do not let them chase the local wildlife. The site is not fully fenced, so this is one for dogs with reliable recall.

What's there. Free parking near the entrance, water fountains, toilets nearby, and open grassed areas with some shade for a picnic. Waste bags and bins are provided. There are wheelchair-friendly paths, and a coffee van often turns up on weekends.

Getting there. The entrance is off Falls Road, Olinda, about an hour from the Melbourne CBD. Turn in from Falls Road for the main car park. By public transport, the 694 bus runs from Belgrave Station to Olinda village, a short walk away.

Nearby with the dogs. The Mathias Track runs straight off the site for a longer leashed bushwalk through fern gullies. Olinda village is minutes away for a coffee, and there are several pet-friendly cottages around Olinda and Mount Dandenong if you want to make a weekend of it.

Not fully fenced and right next to bushland, so if your recall is shaky keep to the lower fairway and clip the lead back on near the play space and the track.

When to go. Weekday mornings are quiet and give nervous or space-loving dogs room to settle. Weekends and sunny mornings get busy, and the car park fills early because of the adjoining playground, so arrive early if you are coming on a Saturday or Sunday.
