W Jackson Reserve is a large, unfenced off-leash reserve on Rendcomb Street in Kilsyth South, run by Maroondah City Council. It is a straightforward, open grassy space for a proper off-leash run rather than a manicured dog park, and that plainness is exactly the appeal for locals who just want room to let a dog stretch its legs.

The dog setup

Dogs must be under effective voice or hand control at all times, and you need to carry a leash even while your dog is off it. Leash up within 10 to 15 metres of playgrounds and picnic areas, and whenever a scheduled sports game or community event is on. Pick up after your dog straight away; fines apply if you do not. Grayswood Reserve, directly across the road, has a playground and stays on-leash, so keep that boundary in mind if you cross over.

Amenities are sparse by design: open grass and not much else, with no fenced boundary and only limited bench seating. Confirm water availability before you rely on it, and bring a portable bottle and bowl. Grayswood Reserve across the road has a shelter and a half basketball court if the family wants a stop between dog laps.

The vibe

Weekday mornings and early afternoons are the quietest stretches, since Saturday and Sunday mornings draw the local walking crowd along with the weekday 4 to 6pm after-work rush. If your dog is anxious or still learning recall, a weekday mid-morning visit gives the most open space.

Getting there and parking

Enter off Rendcomb Street, with access also via Colchester Road, and free street parking runs along the reserve boundary. The nearest bus stops sit on Colchester Road, a short walk away. There is no train line in Kilsyth South, so this is a car or bus trip for most visitors.

Close by with the dogs

For a second off-leash option in the same suburb, the Appletree Hill Reserve dog off-leash area is the other designated spot. Bianco & Black in Kilsyth welcomes dogs and has a dog wash next door, a handy combination after a muddy lap of the reserve, and The Wattle Tree Co pours coffee from its caravan nearby.
