Belgrave Lake Park Dog Off Leash Area

Belgrave Lake Park's off-leash area sits on Bridgewater Road at the edge of the Dandenong Ranges, a forested pocket around an 1893 reservoir where mountain ash gives way to open grass. It has been upgraded in recent years and now pairs a proper dog play zone with picnic shelters, a nature playground and a 1.6 kilometre circuit walk. The one thing it is not is a fortress: the off-leash zone is largely unfenced, so this is a good-recall park rather than a bolt-the-gate one.

The dog setup

The designated off-leash zone covers the open grassed area bounded by the asphalt walking path, with a play area at the western end featuring big logs, a tunnel, a rock mound, a shelter with a seat, and a water tap with a bowl. Outside that zone, the wider park paths and the playground and fitness equipment areas are on-leash. Yarra Ranges council rules expect your dog under effective voice control, a leash carried at all times, and no rushing at other people or dogs.

Two exclusions matter. Dogs are strictly prohibited from Monbulk Creek, which borders the park and is protected platypus habitat, and the lake shoreline is off-limits too because of birdlife. Dawn and dusk are when the platypus are active near the reed beds, which is a good reason to walk the shoreline stretch on-lead and quietly.

The vibe

Weekday evenings from 5 to 7pm and weekend mornings from 9am to noon draw the crowds; either side of those you may have the grass to yourselves. Winter turns the ground muddy in patches, so expect a dirty dog after rain. The mix of bush walk, lake and play equipment means non-dog family members have plenty to do while you throw a ball.

Getting there and parking

The park is on Bridgewater Road, Belgrave, with upgraded parking on site. Belgrave Railway Station is a short walk away on the Lilydale line, which makes this an easy car-free outing from the city. Bins are usually stocked but carry your own bags just in case.
