What visitors mention
Belgrave Lake Park's off-leash area sits on Bridgewater Road at the edge of the Dandenong Ranges, a rustic, forested stretch where dogs can run properly off the lead. The catch: it is largely unfenced and borders both the lake and a platypus-habitat creek, so this is a good-recall venue, not a fenced enclosure.
The rules. Off-leash within the designated area, but dogs must be leashed in the car park and any signed on-leash zones. Dogs are not permitted in the lake itself, it is protected for birdlife and other wildlife. Keep dogs leashed near the creek edge too, it is known platypus habitat. Because the area is not fully fenced, your dog needs to reliably come back when called. Pick up after your dog; bins are usually stocked but it pays to carry your own bags.
What's there. Rustic stone shelters, picnic tables and seating for owners, public toilets, and a fresh water station for dogs. There is a separate, fenced playground for children away from the off-leash zone.
Getting there. The park is on Bridgewater Road, Belgrave, with parking available on-site off the road. It is also a short walk from Belgrave Railway Station on the Lilydale line, so it is an easy car-free option from the city.
Nearby with the dogs. Earthly Pleasures Cafe on Burwood Highway has a large garden with dog-friendly outdoor tables. Babaji's Kerala Kitchen, also on Burwood Highway, offers footpath and veranda seating where dogs are welcome, with free raw bones sometimes on offer.

When to go. Weekday evenings from 5 to 7pm and weekend mornings from 9am to noon are the busiest windows, so aim either side of those if you want the park to yourselves. Winter turns the ground muddy fast, so a towel for the car is worth it, and sunny mornings are best for birdwatching and easier footing on the trails. Good for confident, well-recalled dogs who love a proper bush sniff.
