Johns Hill Lookout Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Johns Hill Lookout Reserve is an unfenced ridge-top reserve on Ridge Road in Kallista, run as an off-leash dog area with 360-degree views over the Dandenong Ranges. It is open bushland on a slope rather than a manicured dog park, and it rewards dogs with solid recall.

The dog setup

Keep the lead on until you reach the designated off-leash section, then run the dog under effective voice control, lead carried. Nothing is fenced here and the reserve backs straight onto bushland, so it is not secure for dogs that bolt or chase wildlife.

Facilities are almost nil by design: two unshaded picnic tables and a small community book exchange. There are no bins, no poo-bag dispensers and no water taps, so bring your own water and carry everything out.

Worth knowing

The ridge-top position is the whole point. The lookout takes in the Yarra Valley side of the ranges, and the evenings that draw photographers for sunset also suit dogs: cooler air, fewer visitors and long light across the valley.

Ground can be slippery after rain and the slope drops away on the bushland side, so keep an eye on footing near the edges, particularly with older dogs.

Max: sunset run on the ridge, then a short drive down to Kallista village for the post-walk coffee. Bring water, because the tap fairy does not visit. Weekend mid-mornings draw the regulars, so late afternoon tends to be the quieter slot.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits off Ridge Road in Kallista with roadside parking near the entrance. Public transport does not reach it directly, so a car is the practical option; the village shops are a few minutes' drive downhill.

For a fenced alternative up the hill, Old Olinda Golf Course Dog Off Leash Area offers enclosed running, and Mt Morton Reserve is the other big unfenced run on this side of the ranges. The RJ Hamer Arboretum loop at Olinda extends the day into a proper walk.
