Johns Hill Lookout Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Johns Hill Lookout Reserve is an unfenced ridge-top reserve on Ridge Road in Kallista, run as an off-leash dog area with 360-degree views over the Dandenong Ranges. It is not a manicured dog park: open bushland on a slope, best suited to dogs with solid recall.

The rules. Dogs must be leashed until you reach the designated off-leash section, then can run under effective voice control. The area is not fenced and backs onto bushland, so it is not secure for dogs that bolt or chase.

What's there. Two unshaded picnic tables and a small community book exchange. There are no bins, no poo-bag dispensers, and no water taps, so bring your own water and carry out everything you bring in.

Getting there. Off Ridge Road in Kallista, with parking along the roadside near the entrance. Public transport doesn't reach the site directly, so a car is the practical option.

Watch-outs. The ridge-top position means it can get windy, and with no fencing your dog needs to be reliable off-leash around the surrounding bush edge.

Nearby with the dogs. Kallista Tea Rooms and Cork at Cooks Corner both take dogs on their outdoor seating, a short drive from the reserve.

Go for the sunset. Weekday mornings and Sunday afternoons are quietest, Saturday mornings draw the most locals. Good for dogs that are solid off-leash and owners happy to pack in their own water.
