Cork at Cooks Corner

Cork at Cooks Corner is a bistro and cellar door at 445 Monbulk-Sherbrooke Road in Kallista, on the edge of the Dandenong Ranges, with a decked outdoor area looking across Sherbrooke Forest. Dogs are welcome on the terrace, which makes it a natural stop for walkers coming off the tracks around the village.

The dog setup

The outdoor deck is where dogs go; the bistro interior is off limits. The terrace is on the intimate side, so tables sit reasonably close together, which suits a calm dog that will settle rather than one that wants space to patrol. Keep the lead on, and carry your own water bowl as a backup because the deck does not run one per table. Weekend brunch fills the deck quickly, so book ahead and ask for an end table if your dog needs a little breathing room.

On the plate and in the glass

The kitchen runs breakfast through lunch, with beef cheeks and lamb shank the hearty end, prawn linguine and a rosti in the brunch middle, and a cheese platter built for sharing on the deck. True to the name, the wine list is the point: local tastings, craft beers and a retail shelf of regional wines and produce by the entry. Hours run Tuesday to Thursday 8:30am to 3:30pm, Friday to 9pm, Saturday from 7:30am, and Sunday to 4pm, with seasonal dinner services announced on their socials.

Getting there and parking

There is a small car park in front of the venue and further parking along Monbulk-Sherbrooke Road. Kallista village is walkable from the door.

Close by with the dogs

Note the forest itself: dogs are prohibited on most inner Sherbrooke Forest tracks to protect lyrebird habitat, so plan walks outside the park. The Johns Hill Reserve off-leash area on Ridge Road has open space and views, though it is not fully fenced, and Old Olinda golf course is another option up the hill. Max: Go mid-week if you can. The deck is small and a busy Saturday brunch is a lot for a dog who has just come off a forest drive.
