Carinya Park - Orchard Cottage & Equestrian

Carinya Park is a private equestrian property in the hills at Gembrook, on the eastern edge of the Dandenong Ranges, with one guest cottage: the Orchard Cottage. Dogs are welcome here on request rather than by default, which makes sense once you see the setup. The property runs horse agistment alongside the cottage stay, so a visit comes with resident horses, local wildlife and wide open paddocks rather than a fenced suburban yard.

Dogs at the Carinya Park

Pets are allowed on request, listed as "Pet Friendly - Enquire", and there is no extra charge once the host approves. The important part is the word request: mention your dog when you book rather than arriving with one, and describe its size and temperament. With horses agisted on the property and wildlife moving through, dogs need to be under close control for the whole stay. A calm dog with a solid recall around livestock is the right fit; a chaser or a barker is not. There is no fenced dog run, so plan on lead time around the paddocks.

The place

The Orchard Cottage is a loft-style retreat for two adults, with the queen bed up on the mezzanine. It looks over a young orchard and open paddocks to the forest beyond. Inside there is a Coonara slow-combustion wood heater plus air conditioning, a full kitchen with dishwasher, a TV and a BBQ. The verandah is the best seat on the property, built for sitting still while the horses do their thing in the next paddock. Free on-site parking is included, and the cottage is the only guest accommodation, so there is nobody else around.

Getting there

Gembrook sits about an hour east of Melbourne via Belgrave and Emerald. The township has the Puffing Billy railway terminus, a general store and a pub, and the cottage is a short drive from the town centre along quiet rural roads.

Close by with the dogs

The Cockatoo to Gembrook Trail follows the old railway corridor and makes an easy on-leash walk from the cottage end.
