Cheltenham Park Dog Off Leash Area

Cheltenham Park is a large leafy reserve on the corner of Park Road and Tulip Grove, with two big sports ovals where dogs can run off-leash when no organised sport is on. It is unfenced and open, bordered by the golf club and the pioneer cemetery, so this is a park for dogs with reliable recall rather than wanderers.

The dog setup

Off-leash access applies to the ovals and surrounding grassed reserve, under effective voice control, per City of Kingston rules. The ovals double as sports grounds, so the run is off whenever a match or training session is in progress.

Dogs must stay on-leash within 20 metres of the playground and BBQ areas and on all surrounding footpaths. There is no fence at any boundary, and the park runs close to Park Road and the rail line, so keep the lead handy until you have checked the field is clear.

On-site you get bins, bag dispensers and a drinking tap with a dog bowl option, plus mature trees for shade and a circuit path if you want a structured loop around the ovals.

Worth knowing

The playground here is a serious one, with a flying fox and climbing structures shaded by pines, which is why the 20 metre buffer gets enforced. If your dog needs a fully fenced run instead, Snowdon Reserve offers an enclosed option a short drive away.

Max: walk in, scan for a match or training session, then let go. The ovals are big enough for a proper sprint once the field is clear.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Park Road or Tulip Grove. On-site parking inside the park is limited, so most people use street parking along Park Road, which fills quickly during weekend sport. Cheltenham Station on the Sandringham line is an easy walk.

Close by with the dogs

Le Page Park is another Kingston off-leash reserve nearby if you want to rotate venues. For a coffee after, Drip Cafe is a local stop in Cheltenham.

Weekend mornings and the early and late weekday windows are busiest. Mid-morning on a weekday gives you the most room, and the smaller west oval is the fallback when the main oval is taken.
