A large, leafy off-leash reserve on the corner of Park Road and Tulip Grove in Cheltenham, with two big ovals, mature trees and a circuit walking path. Bordered by a golf club and cemetery, it has the wide-open space that confident, high-energy dogs want for a proper run.

The rules. Off-leash is allowed on the ovals only when no organised sport is in progress, so check before you let go on a weekend. Dogs must stay on-leash within 20 metres of the playground and BBQ areas, and on all surrounding footpaths. Effective voice control throughout, and bins and bags are provided.

What's there. Drinking water with dog bowls, shaded and open seating around the ovals, cricket nets and a circuit path good for a structured loop. Plenty of tree cover for a hot day.

This is not fully fenced and the ovals double as sports grounds. Walk in, check for a match or training session, and keep clear of the playground buffer before you trust the recall.

Getting there. Access via Park Road or Tulip Grove. Parking inside off Park Road is limited, with street parking nearby - aim for Park Road spots at busy times. Cheltenham Station on the Sandringham line is close by.

Weekends and the early-morning and late-afternoon weekday windows are busiest. Mid-morning or early afternoon on a weekday gives you the most room. If the main oval is taken by sport or a big group, the smaller west oval is the fallback.
