A large, open sporting reserve on Argus Street in Cheltenham, where the Western Oval doubles as the off-leash area. Flat, open grass with natural shade and a big car park - good for a high-energy dog that needs room to sprint, as long as you mind the time restrictions.

The rules. Off-leash on the Western Oval is limited to set hours: 5pm to 10am. Outside those hours, and everywhere else in the park, dogs must be on-leash. Keep dogs at least 20 metres from playgrounds and BBQ areas. The oval is only partly fenced with open gates and standard sports fencing, so carry a leash and rely on solid voice control.

What's there. A large car park (around 140 spaces), drinking fountains, seating and picnic tables, plus a rebound wall. Kingston's master plan flags future upgrades including a dedicated dog area.

Two things to watch here - the clock and the open gates. Outside 5pm-10am it is on-lead, and the oval is not enclosed, so keep distractible dogs toward the centre and away from the road side.

Getting there. Located at 79A Argus Street, near the Kingston Road and Bay Road intersection. The large car park makes access easy, which is just as well as it is mostly a drive-to park. Local buses service nearby streets.

Because of the time window, it is busiest 7-9am and 5-7pm. Late weekday mornings are quieter, but remember off-leash ends at 10am. With the partial fencing, keep an eye out for any active sports use on the oval.
