Heatherton Off Leash Dog Park

Heatherton Off Leash Dog Park sits at 1 Ireland Road, Clayton South, on the large open grassed reserve beside Spring Valley Golf Course in the City of Kingston. Locals know the whole site as Heatherton Park or, after the giant wooden sculptures in the playground, Monster Park. The dog area is a big, unfenced stretch of natural grass, which makes it a park for dogs with solid recall rather than a run-and-hope space.

The dog setup

There is no enclosure here: the off-lead zone is the open grass itself, and dogs are allowed off-leash under effective voice control. Kingston's 10-metre rule applies, so the lead goes back on within 10 metres of the Monster Park playground, the BBQs and the picnic areas. Dogs must stay away from wildlife and leave other park users alone unless invited over. Bring your own waste bags in case the bins are full, because the west side of the park, the grassy mounds area, is on-leash, so check where you are before unclipping.

The unfenced boundary runs along Heatherton Road, and snakes are a reported risk in the warmer months, so keep dogs on the paths and out of long grass over summer. Water taps suit filling bowls, and accessible paved paths cut across the park for anyone who prefers walking on a surface.

The vibe

Expect space rather than structure. The grass is huge with slopes but little tree cover, and even on busy days the park tends to feel quiet because most of it is playground traffic, not dog traffic. Weekends and late weekday afternoons between roughly 4 and 6pm draw the biggest dog crowds; Tuesday mornings and Wednesday nights are usually the calmest windows. If your dog is nervous around other animals, a weekday morning is the safest bet.

Getting there and parking

The park is at 1 Ireland Road, Clayton South, with a dedicated car park off Ireland Road and street parking along the road to the golf club. It is easy to reach from Heatherton Road, Springvale Road, Westall Road and Tootal Road. The playground side has shelters, tables, BBQs, public toilets and a half-court basketball court, so families split between kids and dogs have everything in one stop.
