Dales Park Reserve Dog Off Leash Area sits on Washington Drive in Oakleigh South, tucked inside the larger Dales Park sporting reserve alongside netball courts and a playground. The designated off-leash zone is not fully fenced, so it suits dogs with reliable recall rather than nervous runners.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash within the marked zone but must stay under effective voice control. Leash up again in the car park and near the playground and netball courts, and mind the busy Warrigal Road boundary if your dog tends to bolt.

What's there. A drinking tap and bowl for dogs, open grassy space for a run, and a handful of benches for owners. Shade and seating are limited, so bring water on hot days regardless.

Getting there. Park in the dedicated car park off Washington Drive. It fills quickly when netball training or matches are on at the adjoining courts, so a weekday visit is easier for parking. Bus routes run along nearby Warrigal Road.

This one borders traffic and isn't fully enclosed, so keep a lead handy until you're sure of your dog's recall.

Nearby with the dogs. Temperance Society and Chichi House in nearby Hughesdale both do dog-friendly outdoor seating, and Oakleigh Village's Eaton Mall has a wider cluster of cafes a short drive away.

When to go. Friday mornings and weekend mornings are the busiest, largely due to netball activity filling the car park. Weekday afternoons and evenings are quieter and give more room to practise recall before testing the unfenced boundary.
