Davies Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Davies Reserve on Talbot Avenue is a City of Monash multi-use park in Oakleigh South that quietly added a proper off-leash zone alongside its athletics track and playground. It is a working park: sport through the week, families on weekends, and a designated dog area with bushy tracks for dogs that like to sniff rather than sprint.

The dog setup

The off-leash zone sits near the Talbot Avenue side, with native shrub paths that give the reserve a softer feel than its sports-oval neighbours. Off-leash means effective voice or hand control at all times, and a lead under 1.5 metres must be on you even while your dog is off it. When training or matches are running on the track or ovals, leash up within 20 metres of the action and keep off the active grounds entirely. Dogs stay off the playground and at least 10 metres clear of the equipment. The zone is unfenced, so it suits dogs with reliable recall.

The vibe

This is a well-equipped community reserve rather than a bare oval: a 400 metre running track, long jump pits, an outdoor fitness circuit, BBQs and a shaded playground with swings, slides, a fort, a rope hammock and balance posts. Seating around the dog side is limited, so bring something to sit on if you plan to linger. Expect school groups and athletics clubs on weeknights.

Getting there and parking

Street parking fronts Talbot Avenue near the Coombs Avenue corner, with more on the surrounding streets. Huntingdale Station is the closest train stop, then a short bus hop; buses also run along Huntingdale Road and Warrigal Road.

Close by with the dogs

Dales Park's off-leash area is the nearby fallback when Davies fills up, and Jack Edwards Reserve sits over in Oakleigh proper. When to go

Weekday mornings and Sunday afternoons are the quiet windows, and the best pick for anxious dogs. Wednesday and Friday evenings run busiest with local sport, so arrive with a leash already on and work around the 20 metre buffer.
