Mavis Hutter Reserve Dog Off Leash Area on Carroll Road, Oakleigh South, is a wide, tree-bordered stretch of grass with a walking loop and a designated off-leash zone, run by the City of Kingston.

The rules. Dogs run off-leash inside the marked area but must be leashed on the car park approach and surrounding paths. Stay on-leash within about 20 metres of the playground, barbecue and picnic areas, and keep control effective at all times. Pick up after your dog with bags from the dispensers or your own.

What's there. Open grass for a proper run, a circuit walking track around the park, and a nearby playground with soft-fall rubber matting. Built-in shade and toilets are limited on site, so plan around that on hot days.

Getting there. Access is via local residential streets in Oakleigh South, with parking near the reserve entrance. The area is a short drive from Oakleigh and Clayton, both served by train and bus.

Nearby with the dogs. Temperance Society in Hughesdale is a five to ten minute drive with a dog-friendly outdoor area, and Rosstown Hotel in Carnegie is a pet-friendly option for a meal afterwards.

Plenty of open grass here for a proper zoomie session, just watch the playground fence line if you're off-leash nearby.

When to go. Weekday mornings and afternoons around commuting hours, plus sunny weekends, draw the biggest crowds. Mid-week mornings are the quiet window if you want the loop to yourselves.
