Carlson Reserve Dog Off Leash Area is a large, open, unfenced off-leash park on Clayton Road in Oakleigh East, managed by the City of Monash. It is mostly flat grass with a handful of trees for shade, and it doubles as a shared community park with a playground, basketball court and cricket nets, so it suits confident dogs with reliable recall over dogs that need a fenced boundary.

The rules. Dogs need to be under effective voice or hand control at all times while off-leash, and you must carry a leash and use it immediately if your dog is not responding. Dogs must go back on-leash within 20 metres of the playground, BBQ area or any active sporting event. Pick up after your dog and use the on-site bins. Rangers can fine owners whose dogs are not under proper control, so this is not a park to rely on stubborn recall in.

What's there. There is a free BBQ, public toilets, picnic tables, seating and a drinking fountain, plus a poo bag dispenser. Because the playground, basketball court and cricket nets sit inside the same reserve, expect families and sporting groups sharing the space, especially on weekends.

Getting there. The reserve is off Clayton Road near the corner of Atkinson Street. There is free on-site parking with extra street parking nearby. Buses run along Clayton Road, and Clayton and Oakleigh train stations are both a short drive away.

Nearby with the dogs. Oakleigh Central, including the cafes along Eaton Mall, is about a five-minute drive and has plenty of dog-friendly footpath seating. Fregon Reserve (around 1.7 km) and Scotchmans Run Reserve (around 2 km) are other off-leash options if Carlson feels busy.

Weekday afternoons from 4 to 6pm and weekend mornings from 8 to 11am are the busiest windows. For more room to let your dog run, aim for weekday mornings or the early afternoon lull between 1 and 3pm.
