Carlson Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Carlson Reserve Dog Off Leash Area is a large, open, unfenced off-leash park on Clayton Road in Oakleigh East, managed by the City of Monash. It is mostly flat grass with scattered shade trees, and it shares the reserve with a playground, multi-purpose courts and cricket nets, so it suits confident dogs with reliable recall rather than dogs that need a fenced boundary.

The dog setup

Dogs need to be under effective voice or hand control at all times off-leash, and you must carry a leash and use it immediately if your dog stops responding. Dogs go back on lead within 20 metres of the playground, barbecue area or any active sporting event. Pick up after your dog and use the on-site bins. Rangers can fine owners whose dogs are not under proper control, so this is not the park to gamble on stubborn recall.

Max: stay leashed near the playground and cricket nets, they sit close enough to the open grass that an off-leash dog can wander into a match or a kids' area without much warning.

Worth knowing

A multi-stage revitalisation turned the wider reserve into one of the better-equipped parks in the area: a sports oval, courts marked for tennis, basketball, netball and futsal with LED lighting, a table tennis table, handball wall and outdoor gym station. For dog owners, the practical wins are drinking taps with dog bowls, a poo bag dispenser, electric barbecues, picnic tables and public toilets. Expect families and sporting groups sharing the space, especially on weekends.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits off Clayton Road near the corner of Atkinson Street, with free on-site parking including accessible bays and extra street parking nearby. Buses run along Clayton Road, and Clayton and Oakleigh stations are both a short drive away.

When to go

Weekday afternoons and early evenings are the reliable quiet windows. Weekend mornings bring organised sport, playground traffic and the biggest off-leash crowd, so early starts win if your dog needs space.

Close by with the dogs
