Fregon Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Fregon Reserve on Browns Road in Clayton is a straightforward multi-use parkland where the turf pitch area does double duty as the off-leash zone. Managed by the City of Monash, it is an open, unfenced grass space shared with local rugby league and cricket clubs. If you want a no-frills neighbourhood runaround and your dog has reliable recall, it does the job.

The dog setup

The designated off-leash area is the turf pitch, unfenced and open, so dogs must stay under effective voice control the whole time. When club or school sport or training is running, the leash goes back on. Bag dispensers and rubbish bins sit around the reserve and clean-up is required. A dog drinking bowl is set near the playground, handy given how exposed the grass is.

Worth knowing

This is a functional reserve rather than a destination park. Shade is limited, so summer sessions are best kept short. The wider reserve packs in a good playground with slides and climbing gear, cricket nets, a pavilion, picnic tables, BBQs, public toilets and drinking fountains, which makes it a practical stop if you are combining the dog walk with a family outing.

Pepsi: fine for a quick leg-stretch before work, but skip it during Saturday sport. Too many distractions on the pitch and not enough shade.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is at 6B Browns Road with on-site car parking. Clayton station is about a ten-minute walk away on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines, and the Monash University Clayton campus is just up the road, so expect student and commuter traffic at peak times.

Close by with the dogs

For a fully enclosed option, the Haughton Road Fenced Dog Park in Clayton South is the closest secure alternative, and Jack Edwards Reserve in Oakleigh adds another Monash off-leash space. On the drive, Tuckshop Drive Thru Coffee in Notting Hill solves the coffee leg without leaving the car.
