Salt Pan Lake Dog Park

Salt Pan Lake sits in the Salt Pan Creek Wetlands corridor in Bankstown, a natural reserve of boardwalks, lake edges and birdlife managed by Canterbury-Bankstown Council. It is a good dog walk in a wetland setting, but one thing needs correcting up front: this is not a designated off-leash park.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome through the reserve on lead, and the council's published list of off-leash parks in the local government area does not include Salt Pan Lake or the surrounding corridor. Treat any stretch of open grass here as on-lead unless you find current signage saying otherwise.

The standard Canterbury-Bankstown rules apply to the whole reserve: effective control, pick-up immediately, and no dogs within 10 metres of play equipment, BBQ areas or playing fields. Because this is a wetland, waterbirds are everywhere, which is a second reason the lead stays on.

Worth knowing

Boardwalk sections link the corridor through toward Peakhurst, and the ground away from the boards turns soft and muddy after rain, so old shoes and a towel for the car are sensible. Amenities are minimal by design, it is a natural setting rather than a purpose-built dog park. Bin coverage is light, so carry a spare bag out with you even if you arrive without needing one.

Max: good sniffing along the creek, but keep the lead clipped on. The boardwalk is shared with prams and bikes, and the birds never give you a second chance.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is reached from local Bankstown streets with parking in the surrounding residential blocks, and public transport does not run to the gate. It is mostly a walk-in visit from the neighbourhood or a short drive with a street park.

Close by with the dogs

For actual off-leash time, the council-listed Craig Street Reserve Fenced Dog Park in Punchbowl is the nearest fully enclosed option, with Riverwood Park Fenced Dog Park and Virginius Reserve covering the southern side.
