Gahan Reserve is a neighbourhood off-leash park in Abbotsford, on Park Street near the Nicholson Street corner. Only the southern half is off-leash (marked purple on Yarra council maps), and the whole reserve is unfenced, so it works best for dogs with reliable recall. It is a local social hub rather than a destination, handy if you live nearby.

The rules. Off-leash 24 hours, seven days, in the designated southern zone only, under voice or hand control (Yarra City Council). The northern section around the playground and barbecue area is on-leash, and dogs go on lead within 10 metres of playgrounds and barbecues. Carry a lead and clean up after your dog.

What's there. Public toilets, seating and some sheltered areas, plus a playground and barbecue in the on-leash north end. Drinking fountains are usually available, but a portable bowl is worth carrying.

The reserve is open at the edges. Keep your dog on lead until you are well into the southern zone if they are prone to chasing, and treat the boundary as a suggestion, not a fence.

Getting there. Park Street, Abbotsford 3067. Free street parking nearby though it can get tight. Short walk from Victoria Park Station, and close to the 109 tram along Victoria Parade.

When to go. Busiest at commuter peaks (7-9am, 5-7pm) and weekend mornings. For a dog that finds crowds overwhelming, early afternoon is calmer.
