Gahan Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Gahan Reserve is a compact neighbourhood reserve on Park Street in Abbotsford, and only half of it is for the dogs. The southern section is off leash around the clock, the northern half stays on lead, and none of it is fenced. For locals it is an easy daily social stop. For visitors it works best as a bonus run paired with the bigger fenced park a few streets away.

The dog setup

Dogs are permitted off leash 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but only within the designated southern half of the reserve, which Yarra City Council marks in purple on its maps. Your dog must stay under effective voice or hand control, and you need to carry a lead and bags. The northern section, which holds the playground and barbecue area, is on lead at all times, and council rules keep dogs on lead within 10 metres of playgrounds, barbecues and picnic spots anywhere in the reserve.

The off leash zone is flat grass with a basketball half court at one end, a bin, and a water tap with a bowl. It sits close to local roads, so a dog with patchy recall is better suited to one of the fenced options nearby.

Max: The reserve is open at the edges, so keep your dog on lead until you are well inside the southern zone if they like to chase. Treat the boundary as a guide, not a fence.

Worth knowing

This is a local hangout rather than a destination park. It gets busy at commuter peaks and weekend mornings, when nearby apartment dwellers drop their dogs in before and after work. Early afternoons are calmer if your dog prefers space. Public toilets, seating and some shelter are on site, though shade is limited in the middle of the day.

The reserve sits on Park Street near the Nicholson Street corner, Abbotsford 3067. Street parking nearby is free but tight at peak times. Victoria Park station is a short walk away, and the 109 tram along Victoria Parade stops within easy walking distance.
