Coffee Institute

Coffee Institute is the busy specialty cafe on Walkerville Terrace, a few minutes north of the Adelaide parklands, with a brunch menu that runs on generous portions and a Persian twist. It draws over a thousand reviews for good reason, and the outdoor section is where the dog-owning regulars congregate.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables, and the cafe has covered part of that area with a walk-in shelter the regulars call the igloo, which turns a cold or drizzly Adelaide morning into a workable breakfast. Water bowls are readily available outside and the staff are easygoing about well-mannered dogs. Keep your dog leashed and tucked close to the table, since the footpath seating sits in a steady stream of walkers and cyclists.

The vibe

This is a full-service cafe with a healthy, trendy feel and a kitchen that plates food worth photographing. The corn and zucchini fritters, pulled beef Benedict, sujuk, french toast and banana bread come up again and again, and chai lattes have a following of their own. Coffee runs from the house blend roasted locally by Rio Coffee through rotating single origins on batch brew and cold brew. Hours are 7am to 3pm Monday to Saturday and 8am Sunday, and it fills up early on weekends, so arrive before nine if the outdoor tables matter.

Getting there and parking

The address is 96 Walkerville Terrace, Walkerville, an easy drive or bus ride from the city. Free street parking runs along Walkerville Terrace and the side streets, with accessible parking and a step-free entrance. Weekend mornings tighten up, so park a street back and walk in with the dog.

Make a day of it

The Torrens corridor is close enough to build the morning around. North Adelaide Fenced Dog Park gives an off-lead run on the way home, William Lawson Park Dog Park covers the northern side, and the Kate Reed State Recreation Area adds proper bushwalking minutes away in Prospect. If you are queuing at the Cafe, Frankly Bagels down in Prospect is a backup coffee stop.
