Kate Reed State Recreation Area

Kate Reed State Recreation Area is 120 hectares of native peppermint and swamp gum bushland in Prospect, about ten minutes from the Launceston CBD, with over 15km of unsealed trails shared between walkers, trail runners and mountain bikers.

The rules. Dogs must be kept on lead at all times. This is a genuinely high-traffic mountain bike area with narrow tracks, so an on-lead dog is as much about your dog's safety as anyone else's. Pick up and remove all waste, and stay on the marked trails to protect the bushland.

What's there. The reserve is unfenced throughout, so a lead is doing real work here, not just ticking a box. Named tracks include the Boundary, Fenceline and Berm trails, with information signage at the main trailheads. There's no water on site, so bring your own.

Getting there. The main car park sits near the entrance close to the Silverdome in Prospect. Metro Tasmania buses run to Prospect, but expect a short walk in from the nearest stop. It's also an easy cycle from the Launceston CBD.

Watch-outs. Mountain bikers use this reserve heavily, particularly around the Berm and Rock Drop trails, so stay alert on blind corners even though pedestrians technically have right of way.

Nearby with the dogs. Cafes in Prospect and nearby Kings Meadows have outdoor seating that welcomes dogs, and pet-friendly apartment stays are easiest to find a short drive away in Launceston itself.
