Francis Winifred

Francis Winifred is the neighbourhood brunch spot for Oak Park, set on Winifred Street a short walk from the Craigieburn line station and right off the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail. It has a genuine following among local dog owners, with a reputation as one of the best dog-watching cafes in Melbourne's north, and it trades 7am to 3pm on weekdays and 8am to 3pm on weekends.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating at the front, and regulars report staff happily letting well-behaved dogs inside when the room is quiet, which puts it a notch above the standard footpath deal. Water bowls are generally out for visiting dogs. Keep your dog on a lead and clear of the service path, because tables fill fast and the floor plan is snug.

Worth knowing

The menu is proper brunch: Turkish eggs, ham hock bene and baked eggs headline, with halloumi making regular appearances and Allpress espresso behind the machine. It is popular with runners and cyclists coming off the creek trail, so there is usually a dog or two already parked outside, which makes it an easy place for a reactive dog to learn the cafe ropes. Weekday mornings are the calm window; Sunday mornings bring a queue.

Oak Park station is a short walk away on the Craigieburn line, and the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail effectively starts at the door for anyone arriving under their own steam. Free street parking runs along Winifred Street and the surrounding blocks, though weekend mornings fill it up quickly.

Close by with the dogs

The off-lead payoff is close: JP Fawkner Reserve Dog Off Leash Area sits nearby for a proper run before or after coffee, and the creek trail itself makes the on-lead connection.
